Didier Drogba

Dear people on Edublogs,

On this post, I will be talking about how the sport soccer and one man saved lives. Soccer is more than just 22 overpaid men chasing the ball.  On March 11, 1978, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast Didier Yves Drogba Tébilywas born.  Emigrating to France at an early age. Drogba quickly becomes a soccer sensation and joined Chelsea in 2004.  The Ivory Coast player was Chelsea’s star player. He led the team into three English Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups.

Drogba was named the captain for the Ivory Coast national team. He secured a 3-1 win against Sudan to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. While Ivory Coast was playing Sudan there Ivory Coast was involved in a bloody civil war. Which would of killed over 4,000 people if it wasn’t for Didier Drogba. After the 3-1 win, Drogba was handed the microphone in the changing room.

Along with his teammates, he said this ”

“Men and women of the Ivory Coast,” he said down the lens, his face stern and sincere. “From the north, south, center, and west, we proved today that all Ivorians can coexist and play together with a shared objective: to qualify for the World Cup.
“We promised you that the celebration would unite the people. Today, we beg you, please — on our knees — forgive. Forgive, forgive.
“The one country in Africa with so many riches must not descend into war like this. Please, lay down all weapons. Hold elections, organize elections. All will be better.”
Rising to their feet, broad smiles now spread across their faces, the players started to sing.
“We want to have fun, so stop firing your guns.”
His  speech was so fervent and the team’s qualification for the 2006 World Cup. Was enough to convince the government and the enemies to a ceasefire and restart peace talks. One year later the two sides signed an official treaty to declare that the war was over. Unfourtnalty the war broke out again in 2010 but Although Drogba will mostly be remembered for scoring the winning penalty against Bayern Munich in the 2012 champions league. His speech will go down in

history.
